Last month, the ladies of Hot Pink attended a gorgeous wedding that incorporated elements of the bride’s Persian heritage.  A traditional Persian wedding ceremony takes place  around the “Sofreh Aghd,” or the “wedding spread.”  The spread is filled with many items of symbolic significance in Persian culture.

The items typically found in the Sofreh include

-A sacred text, which could be the Avesta, Qur’an, Bible, or Torah
-Mirrors, which allow the couple to see each other for the first time as man and wife
-Two candelabras, symbolic of light, warmth, and energy
-Flatbread, a sign of prosperity in the future
-Eggs, which signify fertility
-Assorted nuts and seeds, which represent strength in the marriage
-Pomegranates and other “heavenly fruits,” a sign of the couple’s joyous future
-Persian roses and rose water to perfume the air
-Crystallized sugar and pastries to sweeten the life of the newlyweds
-Gold coins, which signify prosperity and wealth
-Wild rue and other herbs, incenses that bring good health

During the ceremony, the bride and groom sit at the head of the table.  Family members and friends, usually unmarried bridesmaids, hold a lace or silk canopy over the couple.  Married women take turns grinding two cones of sugar over the couple’s heads, a symbol of good wishes for a sweet life together.  Another married woman sews thread through the lace cloth in a symbolic binding of the couple’s love.

After giving words of wisdom and advice about love and marriage, the ceremony officiant asks the bride’s consent for marriage.  The bride makes her man wait, refusing to answer until the question is repeated three times.  The bride’s family typically yells humorous excuses for the bride before her final consent.  The tradition signifies the bride’s innocence and shyness.

At the ceremony’s conclusion, the bride and groom dip their pinky fingers in honey and feed each other. The honey is thought to sweeten to the couple’s future life together.
